We hosted 3 focus groups with 30 dads from the West Side Community. We asked them to define fatherhood in their words, what motivations they have to be involved in their children’s lives, what barriers they face to involvement, and what community resources are needed.

We found that fathers define themselves in a variety of ways that go beyond the traditional financial provider role, and that they face a great deal of structural barriers to involvement. Fathers found a need for strong community support and resources that are relevant to men and fathers.

Fathers in the West Side Community are seeking recognition for their role in their children’s lives and support to increase opportunities to spend time with their children.

-More father-specific resources.

-Improved safety measures in neighborhood spaces that could be better
utilized by fathers with their kids.

-Programs designed to mediate and support fathers and coparents.

-Recognition of their value as a father.

-Incorporating fathers into community planning and decision-making.

We hosted 3 focus groups with 34 dads from the Winnebago County Community. We asked them to define fatherhood in their words, what motivations they have to be involved in their children’s lives, what barriers they face to involvement, and what community resources are needed.

We found that fathers grapple with the expectations that their primary role in parenting is to be a financial provider. Fathers found a need for increased community resources and support groups from men and fathers.

Fathers in the Winnebago County Community are seeking recognition for the challenges they face and for their role in their children’s lives.

– More mental health resources and peer support groups for fathers.
– Classes and mentorship opportunities for new dads.
– Increased community events.
– More co-parenting programs.
– Community resource lists and/or databases.
